Our Passion and Purpose

I have always been fascinated with the tension between what the numbers say and what humans feel. The numbers have less variability yet it’s incomplete to say that we should only look to numbers for answers. In high-stakes decisions, this duality matters. Systems and structure are needed but love and care for people matters just as much.

This is why I do this work; because in the end, the purpose of the systems and structure is to facilitate our love and care for people. And in high-stakes situations, getting it right is all the more important.

Michael Rainey

President and Decision Science Lead

Michael Rainey is a seasoned leader with over 25 years of experience in decision science, data analytics, and geospatial analysis, underpinned by a strong academic and military background. As an educator and former Assistant Professor at the United States Military Academy, West Point, Mr. Rainey honed expertise in Systems Engineering, Decision Analysis, Project Management, and Innovative Engineering while directly contributing to the development of future leaders and inspiring each to a lifetime of service.

In the military sector, Mr. Rainey showcased exceptional leadership and strategic acumen during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Serving as a Commander with an area of responsibility in Baghdad, Iraq, he demonstrated operational excellence and resource management skills critical in high-pressure environments. Later, as Aide de Camp to the Commanding General of the US Army Corps of Engineers, Mr. Rainey spearheaded major reconstruction projects in Iraq and Afghanistan, further emphasizing his strengths in decision-making amidst uncertainty and ambiguity.

Michael's Bio

I am a former active duty service officer in the United States Army and currently serve as a strategic level scientific, technical, and decision science consultant with a desire to continue a lifetime of service to high stakes leaders that make decisions daily with human lives in the balance.

My last duty position in the Army was to serve as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. While on staff, my faculty research initiatives extended into systems engineering design and project management, decision science, and the design and development of analytics to support leaders in making the highest quality decision possible when faced with uncertain and combative environments.

I believe that leaders cannot adequately express the value of human life to those they serve through quantitative decisions and technology solutions alone.

To be clear, I believe your systems cannot love your people for you. Only you can do that. Allow me to tell you about solidifying this belief through my time in the military, working in the public sector and as a small business owner – and high-stakes decisions I have made in my own life.

Past Accomplishments:

Academic rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering (DSE) at the United States Military Academy (USMA)
Held responsibility for five courses at the undergraduate level (Project Management, Production Operations Management, Foundations of Engineering Design and Systems Management, Stochastic Models, and Applied Systems Design and Decision Making)
Served as a Research Associate for the C4I Center at George Mason University
Continues to serve leaders within Department of Defense
